What GTM engineering costs in South Africa (2026)

In 2026, GTM engineering work from an international agency typically costs $5,000–$8,000 a month (about R82,000–R131,000), according to a GTME Pulse survey of 228 practitioners, including 67 agency operators. South African comparables start lower: MO Agency publishes RevOps retainers from R45,600 a month. Tools such as Clay, Sales Navigator and your CRM are billed on top.

Key takeaways

  • International GTM engineering agencies cluster at $5,000–$8,000 a month (about R82,000–R131,000 at R16.37 to the dollar), with pure Clay build work lower and full-stack work higher.
  • Reliable South African salary data for GTM engineers doesn’t exist yet: the closest local proxies disagree by more than half, so treat any single “SA salary” figure with suspicion.
  • The tool stack is a separate bill of roughly R25,000 a month for a five-rep team in the worked example below, before any service fee.
  • The fairest way to judge a quote is against what your reps’ list research costs you today, which the worksheet below helps you calculate with your own numbers.

What are you paying for when you buy GTM engineering?

GTM engineering is the data, scoring and signals work that tells your reps who to contact next, when and why. You’re buying a system rather than a list, and the price reflects four parts of it. For how the full programme fits together, see how GTM engineering works for a SaaS sales team.

  1. The diagnosis. Someone has to study your closed-won and closed-lost history to work out who you actually win. This is analyst time, and it sets the quality of everything after it.
  2. The build. Building a TAM (total addressable market) from those patterns, scoring it for fit and intent, and wiring a signal layer so accounts surface when something changes.
  3. The upkeep. Scores drift, people change jobs and data sources break. A system nobody maintains is out of date within a few quarters.
  4. The tools. Enrichment credits, prospecting seats and CRM licences. These are usually billed to you directly, even when a partner does the work.

When two quotes look far apart, they usually cover different parts of this list. A cheap quote often covers the build only.

International agencies

The most useful public dataset is GTME Pulse’s 2026 agency pricing guideSource 2, based on 228 practitioners including 67 agency operators. It puts the median monthly fee at $5,000–$8,000 and reports that about 70% of the agency operators it surveyed charge monthly retainers. A second, less neutral source points the same way: DevCommX, an agency that ranks itself in its own roundupSource 3, says retainers typically run $6,000–$12,000 a month (vendor data). Treat both as international, mostly US-facing prices.

South African agencies

Public ZAR prices for this kind of work are rare, because most local providers quote after scoping. One exception is MO Agency, which publishesSource 4 RevOps and integrations work from R45,600 a month with a three-month minimum (the page doesn’t say whether VAT is included). That’s a CRM and integrations service rather than market mapping and signals, but it’s a fair local reference point for what a specialist retainer costs.

Freelancers and fractional help

GTME Pulse reports general hourly rates of $75–$200 and advisory rates of $200–$400 an hour. At those general rates, 20 hours a month costs about R24,560–R65,480, the same range as MO Agency’s R45,600 from-price.

Hiring in-house: why the SA salary number is hard to pin down

This is where public data runs thin for South Africa. GTME Pulse reports a median salary of $135,000Source 5 for GTM engineers (about R2.2 million) across 228 respondents in 32 countries. Its location data has no South African figures.

Local salary sites don’t track “GTM engineer” as a title yet. The nearest proxy, sales operations manager, gives two very different answers. PayScale shows an average of R512,500 a yearSource 6 from 14 profiles (updated September 2025). Indeed South Africa shows an average of R20,036 a monthSource 7 (about R240,000 a year) from 30 reported salaries (updated August 2026). Both samples are small, and the title covers everything from a CRM administrator to someone who builds scoring models.

Our reading: if you hire, price the role from recruiter quotes for the skills you need (Clay or similar enrichment tools, CRM administration, basic scripting, SQL) rather than from a salary site. Then add the costs a salary figure hides:

  • Employer UIF at 1% of pay, capped at the R17,712 monthly ceilingSource 8 (so at most R177.12 a month).
  • The Skills Development LevySource 9 at 1% of payroll, if your total payroll is above R500,000 a year.
  • Recruitment fees, equipment and the same tool bill an agency would use.
  • Ramp time, and the risk that the whole system lives in one person’s head.

What the tool stack costs on top

Tools are almost always a separate bill. Prices below are the vendors’ own list prices on 30 September 2026. Check them before you budget, because they change often.

Many teams already pay for the CRM and some seats, so your extra cost may be much lower.

What pushes a quote up or down

  • The state of your CRM. Clean deal stages and loss reasons make the diagnosis faster. Three years of free-text notes make it slower.
  • Where your data lives. Coverage of South African companies varies by data provider. Ask how the provider will check it for your market before you accept a build timeline.
  • The number of segments. Scoring one clear ICP is quicker than scoring four segments with different buyers.
  • Signals and warming. A market map without signals is cheaper to build and less useful to your reps.
  • Maintenance. A one-off build costs less up front. A maintained system costs more over a year and is the only kind that stays current.

Build once, or build and maintain?

A one-off build suits a team with someone in-house who can own the tables, scoring and signals afterwards. If nobody can, the saving is temporary: scores drift as your wins change, contacts move jobs and enrichment sources change format. Ask every provider what happens in month four, who fixes a broken workflow, and whether everything is built in your own accounts so you keep it if you stop working together.

See how an engagement is shaped: the stages, what you get at each one and how quotes work are on How we engage. If you’d rather start smaller, the GTM Data Audit is a fixed-scope first step.

How to judge the return with your own numbers

Compare any quote with what your current approach already costs, rather than with another quote. In Salesforce’s 2026 State of Sales survey of 4,050 sales professionals, sellers spent 40% of their time sellingSource 13 (industry data, multi-country). The same release says reps devote “nearly one full day of their workweek to prospecting”.

Use this worksheet:

  1. Count the reps who build their own lists or research accounts before outreach.
  2. Estimate hours per rep per week spent finding and researching accounts. Ask them for last week, not an average.
  3. Work out the loaded hourly cost per rep: monthly salary plus commission, employer levies and tools, divided by about 173 working hours a month.
  4. Multiply: reps × weekly hours × 4.33 weeks × loaded hourly cost = the monthly cost of list research.
  5. Compare that figure with the monthly cost of the option you’re considering, including tools.
  6. Then ask the revenue question: if those hours went into conversations with better-timed accounts, how many extra deals would pay for the difference? Use your own win rate and average deal size.

Fictional company, for illustration only: 6 reps × 6 hours a week × 4.33 weeks = 155.9 hours a month. At a loaded cost of R50,000 a month per rep (R289 an hour), that’s about R45,000 a month spent on list research, before counting a single missed deal.

The number a quote has to beat
Six reps researching six hours a week cost about R45,000 a month Example data for a fictional company, for illustration only. The worksheet multiplication: 6 reps who build their own lists, times 6 hours a week each, times 4.33 weeks a month, gives 155.9 hours a month. Times a loaded cost of R289 an hour (R50,000 a month per rep divided by 173 working hours) gives about R45,000 a month spent on list research, before counting a single missed deal. Compare that figure with the monthly cost of any option, including tools.

It won’t prove any option pays back, but it tells you the size of the number a provider has to beat, and it gives you a figure to put in front of your CEO.

How to compare quotes: a checklist

  • Does the quote start with your own sales history, or with a generic ICP?
  • Is every tool built in accounts you own, with documentation you keep?
  • Which tool costs are included, and which are billed to you?
  • What’s delivered by week 4, week 8 and week 12?
  • Who maintains the system afterwards, and what does that cost?
  • How much of your team’s time does it need each week?
  • Is the price in rand or dollars? A dollar retainer moves with the exchange rate every month.
  • What does the provider say it won’t do? An honest “not for you” is a good sign.

Pricing generally starts from R20,000/month for an initial 3-month project (excl. VAT): Diagnose, Build and Hand over. Every engagement is quoted after a 30-minute diagnosis, because the scope depends on your data, your team and your market. Ongoing support after the project is optional and quoted separately.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to hire a GTM engineer in South Africa than to use an agency?

It can be, but the salary is only part of it. Local salary data for the role is thin and contradictory, so get recruiter quotes. Then add UIF, the Skills Development Levy if it applies, recruitment, tools and ramp time. The larger risk is dependency: if one person holds the whole system and leaves, you may be starting again.

Are tool costs included in agency fees?

Usually not. Enrichment credits, prospecting seats and CRM licences are normally billed to you, often in US dollars. For a five-rep team the stack can be around R25,000 a month at list prices, though you may already pay for part of it. Ask each provider for a written tool estimate before you sign.

What does an outbound infrastructure audit cost?

GTME PulseSource 14 reports that international agencies charge $2,000–$5,000 (about R32,740–R81,850) for an outbound infrastructure audit as a project. Scope varies widely, so compare what the audit actually examines: your deal history, your data, your process, or just your email set-up. A GTM data audit of your sales history is a different, wider scope. HeyThere’s GTM Data Audit is a fixed-scope project, quoted after a 30-minute diagnosis.

Should I pay per meeting instead?

Some agencies charge per booked meeting; GTME PulseSource 14 puts it at $200–$500 a meeting (about R3,270–R8,190). That pays for activity, not a system you keep. It suits a team that only wants short-term meetings. It doesn’t suit a team that wants to own its market data and scoring.

How often is this guide updated?

Every quarter. Agency prices, tool prices and the exchange rate all change. The “Last updated” date at the top shows when the figures were last checked at their sources.
